I've used several other headsets including the often compared Sennheiser PC360s. The Beyerdynamic MMX300's are my favorite due to pure audio quality. The Sennheiser PC360's were lighter, had more convenient features and controls, but I prefer audio quality over anything else. I had to buy another ser after my cats ate my wires to my PC360s, so I bought these MMX 300's as they were my other top option when considering sets for my previous purchase. The mic is probably of the best seen quality pre-manufactured in a headset as well. Competitive gamers often call this headset the "holy grail of headsets" and I now see why. I've been in the market for a true, audiophile grade set of headphones for a while, looking to upgrade from some Sennheiser 555s. The 555's are a great set of headphones with full and natural sound, but they were lacking clarity in the highs/mids and low-end punch. I don't consider myself to be an audiophile so I can't churn out technical terms, but I was simply trying to find the "it" sound, and these did it for me.
The highs and mids are crystal clear and are the cleanest I've heard in any set. I'd describe the bass to be punchy, clean (not muddy), and not overwhelming - perfect for bass heavy stuff without compromising any of the clarity.
A few things that I found after first using them:
- The tension is on the stiffer side, definitely more than my Sennheisers. I'm used to it now, but I can definitely see how these could fatigue larger heads after a while.
- As others mentioned, the frequency response is very flat, which I was looking for. I spent a good amount of time playing around with my EQ settings to get the perfect sound, especially in the lower end, which is not very thumpy by default, but can be made so with the right settings
- They are much brighter than any set I've ever used, and it took me a while to get used to it. But I'm glad they are this way, since it really helps to bring out nuances in music I wouldn't notice with any other set.
Oh and yes, I do primarily use these for gaming, and they work extremely well with virtual surround processors (I use a Turtle Beach DSS). Skyrim is more immersive than ever =)

I also own the Sennheiser PC360 headset and wanted to find out which headset I'd like better. Ultimately the Sennheiser won only because it had the superior sounding microphone.
The MMX300 is very comfortable (they seal very snugly around your ears so expect to sweat), with really great sound (considering they were being driven with the stock USB adapter directly connected to my laptop). I like how you can position the microphone exactly where you want it. However the microphone was too muddy sounding for my taste. The Sennheiser microphone was quite a bit clearer and not so distant sounding.
If listening to music was my goal I'd keep these as they are wonderful. They are on par with my Bose Quiet Comfort 2 headset. The MMX300 also comes with a very nice carrying bag.
If you are considering the Sennheiser headset but are wondering about the audio quality, wonder no more: the MMX300s crush them. It's not even the same ballpark.
